ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The car accidents that began what would become the year's deadliest weekend on Minnesota roads started on Saturday.
Two separate daytime crashes occurred in Rochester. Two men died in those crashes, which are both under investigation.
But Sunday would prove to be the worst day.
That is when eight people, among them a Grandmother, a mother and her child, were travelling north bound on I-94 when they lost control of their van after being contacted by another car.
The fan hit the median, rolled at least four times and four of the occupants were ejected.
Three died at the scene and five others remain hospitalized.
"We are still continuing to investigate exactly how many people were belted or not but the four ejected certainly indicate those four were not belted in," Lt. Eric Roeske said of the crash.
Alcohol or drugs are not suspected.
Among those injured are two children in critical condition, they are five and 15 years old.
