MINNEAPOLIS - The newest tool in the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office fleet is known as BEAR.
That's short for Ballistic Engineered Armored Response vehicle.
The BEAR is a large rescue vehicle armored on all sides including the windows. The tires are puncture resistant.
BEAR is designed to help law enforcement resolve high risk incidents safely and more quickly. According to the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office, the vehicle will be used to transport SWAT or special response teams to emergent events involving armed offenders such as high-risk warrants, barricaded individuals, or hostage situations.
The Sheriff's Office says the vehicle was purchased with a $400,000 grant from the U.S Department of Homeland Security. It will be used in the 5-state regional area.
