MINNEAPOLIS - A fire destroyed a deli and grocery store across the street from Minneapolis Children's Hospital Thursday morning.
Fire officials say the fire started in the basement of the Chicago Food & Deli located at Chicago Avenue and E. 25th Street around 3 a.m. The blaze quickly spread to the rest of the building and flames were still visible three hours later.
The situation was made more tense when smoke from the fire set off smoke alarms at Children's Hospital because of the way the wind was blowing. Hospital officials say the complex did not sustain any damage.
Because of the presence of smoke Children's decided to close its outpatient clinics and postpone surgeries and procedures. This was the status of Children's Hospital operations as of Thursday afternoon:
All areas of the hospital, including laboratory and Emergency Department, are open and are being monitored. We have postponed or redirected all Minneapolis elective surgery and radiology services for the day.
Areas within Children's Specialty Center will begin to re-open as air quality improves and as equipment and supplies are evaluated. Here is a current status of what areas are open.
Departments that are open are:
- Adolescent Health
- Radiology outpatient
- Children's Heart Clinic
- Pediatric ENT Associates
- Pediatric Gynecology
- Outpatient lab

There is no word on the cause of the fire at this time.
It has not been a good year for the owners of the Chicago Deli. In January two men crashed a stolen van through the front of the restaurant, shattering a large window and causing structural and interior damage.
