ORONO, Minn. - Track athletes at Orono Middle School are coming to grips with a jarring loss after one of their coaches collapsed and died during practice Thursday.
District administrators say track coach and Orono Middle School parent Bob Perry collapsed in a parking lot around 4 p.m. A number of students were present when he went down.
First responders were on the scene immediately but despite their best efforts Perry died. He was 51 years old.
The Orono Schools Crisis Team is on site Friday to support students, faculty and community as needed.
"Our hearts and deepest sympathy go out to his wife, Lisa, his children and family," a district spokesperson said in a written statement. "Our community and schools will work together to support this family and each other."
Perry coached the track team for six years and served as an assistant football coach at Orono High School for the past four years.
