WATAB TOWNSHIP, Minn. - The State Patrol says a 13-year-old girl died in a single car accident in Benton Count Monday night while on her way home from a track meet.
Ellie C. Sovada, a seventh-grader at Cathedral High School, was riding in the back of a sport utility vehicle that left the road and smashed into a tree.
Phillip F. Boyle, 59, was the driver. He was seriously injured. Sofia E. Boyle, 12 and a seventh-grader at Cathedral was also seriously injured. Both are being treated at St. Cloud Hospital.
"We are in mourning," Cathedral President Mike Mullin said. "We're in contact with both families at this point, but we don't have any plans as of yet. We are certainly sending our thoughts and prayers to the families and are mourning with them."
The crash happened at 7:26 p.m. on south U.S. Highway 10 and 85th Street Northwest.
The SUV left the road and struck a road approach. It went in the air, lost control, turned slightly to its left and struck the tree on the passenger side, the State Patrol said.
Watab Township is located about 11 miles north of St. Cloud.
