CLEARWATER, Minn. -- The parents of a 9-year-old who was battling leukemia say their daughter has died.
They posted on their Facebook page Friday night that "Kayleen had passed away from this world to the next. She went very quick and painless."
Earlier last week her classmates celebrated "Kayleen Larson Day" by wearing orange. The mayor of Clearwater declared May 1 Kayleen's day to honor the third grader.
"When she woke up the first thing she said to me when she rolled over was 'Mom is today May 1? And she said it's Kayleen Larson Day,' and I said 'Yes it is.' And she said, 'That's really cool,'" Sarah Larson, Kayleen's mom said.
Her classmates and the entire city of Clearwater went orange to celebrate Kayleen's life and her battle with Leukemia.
Kayleen was diagnosed with leukemia last March and went through chemotherapy twice. It failed both times.
Kayleen was too tired from constant doctor visits to talk on camera when KARE visited, but her parents say the support they have recieved has been healing.
In addition to Kayleen Day, there's also a 5k planned in June. You can find more information on Caring for Kayleen.
