Thousands turn out to Race for the Cure

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. -- Approximately 50,000 people gathered at Mall of America Sunday to participate in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, according to the event's organizers.

The annual race raised $2.5 million for breast cancer research, education, screening and preliminary treatment programs.

The top finishers for the 5k fun are:

Top Male: TJ Schultz, 17, Hartland, Minn. finishing at 17:31

Top Female: Kari Teigen, 24, Minneapolis, Minn. finishing at 20:44

Top Survivor: Cindy Blackstone, 40, Plymouth, Minn. finishing at 23:17

The Susan G. Koman Twin Cities Race for the Cure is one of the largets 5k runs/fitness walks in the world.

Of the proceeds raised in the Twin Cities Race, 75 percent stays in Minnesota to help uninsured and underinsured women fight breast cancer. 

The remaining 25 percent of proceeds fund breast cancer research programs.
