PORTLAND - A speeder got away clean in Portland the other day thanks to an ill-timed road crossing by a mother duck and her ducklings.
Portland traffic officer Mark James had just begun pursuit of a motorist who was driving 52 mph in a 35mph zone when he rounded a bend in the road and saw the duck and her babies wandering in the middle of the road.
In-car video shows James waiting for moments, and then when he realizes they're not moving too fast he exits the squad car and tries to shoo them to safety.
By the time the officer is back in the car, the speeder is long gone... a lucky duck, one might say, to dodge what would have been an expensive ticket.
