MAPLE GROVE, Minn. - The Randy Shaver Golf Classic drew 65 groups of golfers on Monday at Rush Creek Golf Club.

The charity event raises money for the Randy Shaver Cancer Research Fund, which goes toward research at the University of Minnesota at various patient aid projects around the state.

"They are on the cutting end of making some big discoveries," Shaver said.

The Golf Classic is the biggest fundraiser of the year for the charity.

Between the golf event, Tackle Cancer and other ancillary events, $410,000 was raised.

"That's a very exciting number for us," Shaver said. "I think it actually caught us a little bit by surprise too. We weren't quite expecting the number to be so high. We're very excited and thankful to everybody that took part."

The Golf Classic also drew some big names including Shaver's co-anchors Julie Nelson and Eric Perkins. Member of the Minnesota Vikings coaching staff also took part including coach Leslie Frazier and General Manager Rick Spielman.

In addition, former NHL star Phil Housley and former MLB star Paul Molitor also played in today's tournament.
