BLOOMINGTON, Minn. -- Bloomington police confirm a woman is dead after a car fire during morning rush hour Wednesday.
First responders were dispatched to East 86th Street and Old Cedar Avenue South around 8:15 a.m. after witnesses reported hearing explosions.
When police and fire crews arrived they encountered a vehicle fully engulfed in flames. Once the blaze was extinguished a woman's body was found inside the vehicle.
Investigators say the victim was a known smoker, and a container of gasoline was on the floor of the passenger side. But they can't say yet what caused the fire.
"It was a little unusual, there was no accident that precipitated this or anything," said Commander Mark Stehlik. "We have investigators on the scene that will work with fire investigators to try and determine what happened."
Bloomington's bomb squad was dispatched to the scene due to the initial reports of an explosion, but police believe what they heard was just flammable parts of the vehicle going up.
At this time police aren't releasing an identity until relatives are notified.
