MINNEAPOLIS - A Minneapolis man is charged with posing as a vulnerable woman's health aide and then having sex with her repeatedly.
Corey Gordon, 42, faces charges of third-degree criminal sexual conduct.
Investigators say the mother of a 32-year-old woman with a rare brain disease was shopping with her daughter at the Mall of America in October. When the woman came out of a store she saw a man sitting with her daughter, and the daughter said they had exchanged phone numbers.
The mother also noticed that Gordon was reading about the young woman's brain condition on his iPad.
The disease causes multiple miniature strokes, resulting in permanent brain damage. It left the victim with the cognitive and emotional ability of someone between eight and 10 years old.
She also uses a walker and wears leg braces and hearing aids.
Over the next few months, the victim's mother found text messages from the man, identified by police as Gordon, to her daughter that she considered inappropriate. She and other family members told Gordon to stay away from the victim, according to a criminal complaint filed in Hennepin County.
During that same time period the victim was taking the Metro Mobility bus to Courage Center, usually by herself, for therapy three days a week. However, on May 24 the mother brought the victim to Courage Center. When she arrived she was told by a staff member that the victim's personal care attendant was waiting for her.
At that point the mother informed the staff member that her daughter did not have a personal care attendant, and became more concerned when she saw Gordon waiting in the common area.
Further investigation revealed that Gordon had been showing up for all of the victim's therapy sessions posing as her personal care attendant (PCA) and would take the victim into the assisted dressing rooms at Courage Center and have sex with her.
