GOLDEN VALLEY - Heavy rains on Saturday afternoon blew a manhole cover off at Como and 21st in St. Paul and forced traffic to be diverted on a section of Highway 280 in Roseville.
The rain fell in about a three-hour window starting at about 2 p.m.
As much as 1.75 inches of rain fell in parts of the metro, mostly to the west and north of Minneapolis.
Brookview Golf Course in Golden Valley was forced to reroute golfers even after the rain came through. Holes 14 and 15 were under water after the heavy rains.
"Obviously you don't want to lose a Saturday," said course supervisir Andrew Bromander. "But it will all dry out."
The rains caused street flooding at Highway 36 and Fairview Avenue in Roseville. Witnesses said it looked like a river.
"I thought I could make it through," said Zach Clark, whose car got stuck. "Then I noticed the passenger side filling up with water."
Then there was a group of friends in Roseville, who made the best of the flash flooding by pulling out a their canoe and scooting along in about eight inches of water.
