SHELL LAKE, Wis. - A man who was attacked by a black bear in northwestern Wisconsin is recovering at a hospital in the Twin Cities. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources says the man was attacked while out in his yard near Shell Lake Monday about 9:30 p.m.

DNR Wildlife Manager for Northern Wisconsin, Mike Zeckmeister says the victim has been identified as Jerry Brown.

Zeckmeister says Brown's dog was also injured in the attack, but could not confirm that the dog initiated the confrontation with the bear.

Zeckmeister says the brother shot at the bear but could not find any evidence that the bear was hit.

From listening to the accounts from the victim's brother, Zechmeister believes the bear was a large male.

DNR employees are trying to find the bear.

The Burnett County Sheriff's Department says Brown was taken by a private party to the hospital in Shell Lake. Brown was later taken by air to a hospital in the Twin Cities.

The DNR says Brown is recovering at the North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale. At last check he's in critical but stable condition.
