Pedestrian struck and killed at rest stop near Duluth

CARLTON COUNTY, Minn. - A motorist is in custody after a pedestrian was hit and killed at a northerneastern Minnesota rest stop Wednesday night.

The Minnesota State Patrol website says it happened at the Culkin Rest Area in Carlton County just before 6 p.m. A 62-year-old Cloquet man was walking in the rest area along Interstate 35 Wednesday evening when a vehicle struck and killed him.

Witnesses reported seeing a Ford pickup leaving the scene after the man was hit and called 911.

A State Trooper saw a vehicle matching the witness description and began pursuit. The suspect vehicle fled, but was eventually stopped with help from Carlton and St. Louis County deputies, Hermantown and Proctor Police, and agents from the DNR Enforcement Division.

The 55-year-old driver is in custody facing charges.
