COON RAPIDS, Minn. - Never in all of her 3-year-old life has June Rudd asked for anything. But just once, 12 weeks ago, her Mom and Dad asked for some love from all of you.
"We ended up getting more than we asked for," June's dad, Adam Rudd said Thursday night.
On a cold March afternoon as they waited vigil in Children's Hospital hoping June would make it thru another episode of her terminal illness Adam and Kati Rudd asked that out of the kindness of your hearts, you send June one.
A 4 inch by 4 inch paper heart, that's what they wanted.
They asked big, they wanted 20,000 to decorate her room but what they got could fill all the rooms of every hospital in the Twin Cities.
"It's made her life bigger than I ever thought it could," Kati Rudd said.
Ninety-three thousand hearts.
That is what now surrounds June on her bedroom walls in her room at night.
Hearts from every corner of the world, hearts from every walk of life.
"Every age range, grandmas, great grandmas and little kids, two week old baby footprints," Kati said going thru them all.
A cynic would say they are just paper, that they couldn't possibly matter to a little girl who can barely see or communicate much of anything.
But in June's room a cynic would be a fool.
The hearts on those walls are a living breathing reminder of the power of kindness.
"It will get us thru her lifetime, a constant reminder of all the good in the world," Kati said.
And so with thousands of hearts still waiting to be unpacked June Rudd's wish for your love has been granted five times over.
And never will a night go by when she won't be surrounded by each and every one of you.
"Thank you. From the bottom of our hearts," Kati said.
