SHOREWOOD, Minn. - Crews from the Excelsior Fire Department and a number of nearby communities put out a boat house fire on Christmas Lake Friday.
The call came in around 7:45 a.m. directing firefighter to a residence on the 5900 block of Ridge Road in Excelsior. There they found a two story structure described as a boat house fully engulfed, and the blaze was quickly elevated to two alarms.
Fire Chief Scott Gerber says the boat house is down a steep embankment from the residence and the area is heavily treed, that made it extremely difficult to reach. Compounding the challenge is that there were no fire hydrants or water supply in that area of Shoreview, so tankers from neighboring departments had to truck in water and pumped into a portable water tank.
Gerber says at least a couple firefighters were overcome by heat as they fought the fire.
