EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. - The family of the victim killed by a falling tree in Eden Prairie has identified her as 56-year-old Nina Mackay.
Authorities say a 911 call came in at 5:21 p.m. Friday evening about an incident on a walking trail in Miller Park. The caller reported hearing the sound of a falling tree and someone screaming.
Emergency crews responded to the corner of George Moran Drive and Belfast Cove where they found Mackay pinned under a large basswood tree. She died at the scene.
In a statement released Saturday, Nina's family says she was a terrific wife and loving mother.
"Her bright eyes, genuine smile and infectious spirit brought life to everything and everyone she touched," the statement read. "Next to her family, Nina's passions were her dogs and fitness. A daily hour long run and hour walk for the dogs were her norm. We lost her doing the things she loved, exercising her dogs with a walk in the park."
Authorities are trying to figure out why the tree fell. At the time, there were wind gusts up to 23 miles per hour. The basswood tree was 90 years old and had a 30-inch diameter.
