DUNDAS, Minn. - The small town of Dundas took on heavy rains early Saturday morning forcing 12 people to be evacuated from their homes.

"I'm just glad we made it out OK," said Travis Smith, a homeowner in the town one mile south of Northfield.

Parts of Rice County saw close to 8 inches of rain in the span of a few short hours closing off roads and overwhelming drainage systems.

Smith's home was completely surrounded by rising waters. Firefighters had to link arms to bring Smith and his roommate to safety.

"One of my foundation walls collapsed," he says. "I heard a loud crack (Saturday) morning."

The city of Northfield was hit hard, too. A local bar on the banks of the Cannon River was battling water all day. Residents at a nearby apartment had to be evacuated.

For Smith, his basement is destroyed and his kitchen and living room is a muddy mess.

"Never thought this could happen," he said. "I'm glad the whole house didn't collapse."
