GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. - Minnesota Twins catcher Joe Mauer was coming off a three-hit night and a season that already has included a trip to the All-Star game, but the highlight of 2013 will no doubt be the birth of his twins.
Mauer was a late scratch to the lineup on Tuesday night. The Twins were in the middle of a west coast road trip that started in Anaheim.
Word of the news first broke on Twitter.
"Joe Mauer has been scratched from tonight's lineup & fly to Minnesota to be with his wife who went into labor. They are expecting Twins," Tweeted Dustin Morse, a member of the Twins communications team.
Expecting twins seems fitting for Mauer, a St. Paul native, who was drafted by his hometown team.
Mauer signed an 8-year, $184 million contract in 2010. He has won batting titles and an MVP.
He and Maddie Mauer married this past offseason.
