LINO LAKES, Minn. -- The Facebook posts reads: "Attention Teenagers: While most of you are very studious, we have been informed that a few of you may have the attention span of a ferret on crystal meth. So we will be brief."

Considering it came from the Lino Lakes Police Department, one might think the account was hacked, but it's not.

"It's social media, this isn't our master's thesis on how to reduce crime, fear and disorder," smiled Capt. Kelly McCarthy.

She is one of several officers who regularly and often update the department's Facebook page.  It started in January and the posts are quirky, witty and most of all intentional, to not only illicit a reaction, but to help people understand officers are just like them.

"So now that you can relate to us as individuals," explained McCarthy. "We're not so scary and you might be more willing to tell us about something suspicious in your neighborhood when you realize that we're not blowhards."

While today the post is mostly about teenagers, the police department has also poked fun and new residents and Lino Lakes lifers too.

"We'll say where were you tonight and they'll say I was at Shirley K's and I'm like what is Shirley K's it hasn't been Shirley K's in 15 years, but okay you mean Trappers," McCarthy said.

It becomes more fodder for Facebook and while many of the comments are in favor of the fun, others are more critical.

"We're going to be silly on our Facebook and twitter that's the place for it. When you're dealing with people when you're arresting somebody for DUI, not the time to be snarky," she said.
