MINNEAPOLIS - Demolition of the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome could begin as early as February, according to the Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority.
Officials told KARE 11 that the final date will depend on whether the Vikings need to use the dome for post-season play.
The MSFA said that crews will spend about six weeks removing larger items from the dome that can be salvaged or recycled.
The next step will be to deflate the roof and then tear down the walls and foundation, officials said.
Officials said Mortenson Construction, the builder of the new stadium, recently decided on the staged teardown rather than the big bang option. The decision was made due to the proximity of nearby businesses.
Groundbreaking on the new stadium will be in October.
