BLOOMINGTON, Minn. - After the storm Tuesday night, many cities that have neighborhoods with significant damage are reminding residents about the importance of checking the licenses of contractors or tree removal businesses that knock on their doors.
Eden Prairie, Edina, Bloomington, St. Louis Park, Mound, Burnsville, Eagan and Richfield all require sales people who go door-to-door seeking business to have a solicitor's license.
St. Louis Park, Mound, Burnsville and Eagan all require an additional license for companies that do tree removal.
Most builders or building contractors have to be licensed through the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry. The department also tracks complaints and enforcement actions.

In addition, homeowners should always ask for referrals, insurance and bonding documents. Always be wary of any company that wants your money up front or that is based out of state.
Many of the cities that had damage from the storm are updating information on their websites. You can find information about the clean up and specific rules about licensing. Find links to those city websites to the left of this article.
