MINNEAPOLIS -- A high school football player from Dassel-Cokato remains in serious condition after suffering a head injury Friday night during a game against Orono.

Luke Nelson's mother, Sara, said they're not sure how the injury happened.

"We think there might have been a head-on-head or maybe a knee-on-head collision," said Nelson.

She said a couple of plays later, she saw her son stumbling and looking disoriented.  That's when the coach stopped the game to see if Luke was alright. Nelson said Luke collapsed and began having seizures.

Luke was taken to the emergency room, where they did a CAT scan. The scan showed bleeding. Sara said Luke went into emergency surgery, which saved his life.

"The right half of his skull was removed, but in the last 24 hours he has made tremendous gains," said Nelson.

Sara said Luke is responsive and talking and is making a good recovery.

Several teammates and coaches, including head coach Ryan Weinandt, visited Luke in the hospital on Sunday. The team is planning to do something for Luke at Friday's game in Fairmont, according to Weinandt.

Luke's dad said his son's accident has made him rethink toughing out injuries.

"I would tell these kids, 'If your head hurts, you've got to back off, admit it.' There's a whole lot more to life than just winning that game Friday night."
