MEDINA, Minn. - Police say two men arrested in an armed abduction early Thursday morning intended to burglarize a cell phone business the victim manages.
Medina Police Chief Ed Belland says 37-year-old Javier Velasco was abducted at gunpoint from his driveway in Loretto just before 9:30 p.m. Wednesday. Velasco's wife called police and reported that her husband was taken by two men in a red Dodge Charger.
Officers launched an intensive search using K9 units and the State Patrol helicopter and soon located the suspects' vehicle near Pioneer Trail and Highway 55. When law enforcement approached the car, the two suspects fled on foot. Velasco was found inside the trunk of the vehicle. His hands had been zip tied, but he was otherwise uninjured.
Police eventually caught up with the two suspects, ages 31 and 29, and took them into custody.
Belland says police believe the suspects followed Velasco home from a Verizon retail store he manages, intending to steal his keys and burglarize the store.
The chief says the victim and his family are understandably traumatized after the incident.
The Minnesota State Patrol and Hennepin County Sheriff's office assisted Medina police in searching for the two suspects.
