ST. PAUL, Minn. - St. Paul Police are looking for a vehicle involved in a hit-and-run accident Thursday morning that has a pedestrian clinging to life.

Department spokesperson Howie Padilla says a passerby noticed the victim laying on the median of Phalen Boulevard near the intersection with Atlantic around 4 a.m. and called police.

Responding officers found 31-year-old Wade Souster suffering from critical, life threatening injuries. He was rushed to Regions Hospital suffering from severe head trauma, among other injuries.

Souter has worked for the past 10 years at The Downtowner Car Care Center in St. Paul. Co-workers just found out about what happened. He is a graduate of Simley High School in Inver Grove Heights.

At this point police have identified no eyewitnesses to the crash, and have no description of the vehicle they believe hit Souster.

"We really don't know what we're looking for here," Padilla admitted to reporters.

Police say they are desperate for the public's help, and are asking anyone who may have been in that area or who notices fresh front end damage on a vehicle, perhaps on the driver's side, to notify police at 651-266-5727.

"This is a situation where we have little to go on," said Padilla.

The family of Wade Souster released this statement:

"Wade grew up in Inver Grove Heights. He now lives in the Lake Phalen area and often liked to go for a walk late at night. He loves and makes friends with everyone, which is why everyone calls him 'Uncle Wade,' not just his many nieces and nephews."

"We are devastated that whoever hit him did not stop to help. But we are grateful to the driver who found him and did call an ambulance. We are also thankful that Wade is alive and we hope and pray that he will have a full recovery."

"A Caring Bridge site will be set up by this weekend so Wade's many friends and loved ones can follow his progress. We ask that you keep him in your prayers. For anyone who may have information about who hit Wade, please call the police."
