MINNEAPOLIS - If there was any doubt about the enthusiasm for a new plan to revamp the historic Nicollet Mall, there isn't now.
The Minneapolis City Council voted unanimously Friday to approve James Corner Field Operations as the official design team for the makeover of Nicollet Mall.
James Corner Field Operations was chosen from three design teams chosen to present their visions at a public event at the Guthrie Theater Sept. 17.
Previous projects by James Corner Field include the High Line in New York City and the transformation of London's Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. The proposal presented at the Guthrie Theater consisted of three zones along the 12-blocks of downtown Minneapolis called "live, work, and play," which won the votes of the expert panel of judges.
The next step is a public engagement process during which the design team will seek and use input and feedback from the community to formulate a final design for Nicollet Mall.
Construction is scheduled to begin in 2015 with an expected completion date in 2016.
