MINNEAPOLIS - A teenager has been sentenced to a year and a day in prison for accidentally shooting and wounding his 2-month-old nephew in north Minneapolis last month.

The 17-year-old pleaded guilty Monday to reckless discharge of a firearm.

The teen had been handling a .38-caliber revolver he'd brought to his brother's home on Sept. 6 - even though the brother had told him not to have a loaded gun around a baby. The gun went off, and a bullet struck the infant below the right ear.

The teen already has spent 36 days in jail. The St. Paul Pioneer Press reports that with credit for time served, the teen could be out in about eight months.

The baby was treated and released from HCMC.
