MINNEAPOLIS -  The Minneapolis Police Department launched new services on Thursday so members of the public can send tips more conveniently and with 100% anonymity.

The new program is already active. People can send a police tip via text message to the number 847411.

Police asked that you enter "MPD" first into the text subject and then submit the tip. Minneapolis Police then have an option of sending a text back with follow-up questions or simply to confirm that the Minneapolis Police Department received the text and would pass it on to an officer to investigate.

MPD also revealed a new app available for smart phones that offers the same services, but simply as an app service.

The app is called "MPD TIP" and is available at no cost for iPhones and Android models.
