EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. - It turns out that Vikings coach Leslie Frazier has tipped his hand after all.
After playing a bit of cat-and-mouse with reporters earlier in the week Frazier announced Friday that Christian Ponder would start at quarterback Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys.
When asked about choosing Ponder over Josh Freeman, Frazier said that he feels Ponder just gives the Vikings the best chance to win.
After spending three games on the sideline with a rib injury Ponder returned to the starting lineup last weekend against the Green Bay Packers while Freeman sat out with a concussion. But Ponder did little to inspire confidence that he was capable of being the long-term answer at the position. He threw for 145 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions in a 44-31 loss to the Packers.
Many thought Frazier would go back to Freeman against the Cowboys. But Frazier says Ponder gives the team the best chance to win.
The coach also told reporters that defensive backs Chris Cook and Jamarca Sanford would not play against Dallas, leaving the Vikings thin in the secondary.
