EAGAN, Minn. -- Eagan Police say a junior at Cretin Derham Hall has died after crashing into a power pole early Sunday morning.

Authorities responded to the single car accident around 12:30 a.m. Sunday and pronounced the driver and lone occupant, a 16-year-old male from Inver Grove Heights, dead at the scene.

The victim is identified as Max Lowell. Police say he was ejected from the vehicle after veering off the road and striking a power pole at the 900 block of Cliff Road.

According to police, alcohol was not present at the scene, but they say they are waiting on the toxicology report to see if it played a role in the accident.

The crash also downed power lines and caused a power outage in the surrounding area.

Authorities closed a two-mile stretch of Cliff Road while they worked to restore power.

According to police, fatal crashes along this stretch of Cliff Road are rare. The incident is currently under investigation.
