ORONO, Minn. - A prominent doctor was found dead inside his Orono home Friday night.
A second man is also dead after a confrontation with police outside that home.
The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office is investigating, calling the second incident an officer involved shooting.
Investigators spent the day gathering evidence Saturday.
Orono Police were called to the home of Dr. Stephen Larson on the 1000 block of Heritage Lane, near Lake Minnetonka, around 9 p.m. Friday.
Authorities said when they arrived they encountered a man outside, armed with a handgun. They said shots were fired and that man died at the scene. His identity has not yet been released.
They said police then went inside and found Dr. Larson dead of gunshot wounds. They said he was shot before police arrived.
Dr. Larson founded OB/GYN Specialists in Edina and was a prominent doctor in the community. Barb Cookas, a colleague from his practice says he was a wonderful person, "We are all just devastated."
Cookas says Dr. Larson leaves behind a wife, two grown sons and two daughters.
Stacey Larson, one of his daughters, sent this statement to KARE 11: "I would like you all to know what a wonderful man, husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother and friend he was, even to those he didn't really know. Very huge heart that man had and I'm proud to have been given that same heart."
A neighbor couple, who did not want to be named, said Dr. Larson's death is a complete shock. "He delivered lots of babies in the area and all over the area and we've known him a long time and just a wonderful person," they said.
According to investigators, this was an isolated incident and there is no danger to the public.
The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office said the identity of the officers involved in the shooting outside the home will be released at a later date.
