ORONO, Minn. - Investigators say hostility over an issue involving the possible past medical treatment of the suspect's mother may have triggered the fatal shooting of a respected doctor in Orono Friday night.

"We learned that Dr. Larson had provided professional medical care to the mother of the suspect," said Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek.  "The suspect had recently expressed hostility to his family members regarding Dr. Larson."

Dr. Stephen Larson, a well-known and popular physician at OBGYN Specialists in Edina, was fatally shot to death inside his home on the 1000 block of Heritage Road around 9 p.m. Friday. When police responded to reports of gunshots they found 30-year-old Ted Hoffstrom of St. Anthony standing in the front yard holding a handgun. Hoffstrom was shot multiple times by police and died on the scene.

Stanek told reporters that ballistics tests show the gun used to kill Larson was same gun found with Hoffstrom. He added that Hoffstrom is only suspect in this case.

"This is an isolated incident," said Sheriff Stanek.  "This is a situation where there are no winners."

Records show Hoffstrom graduated from the University of St. Thomas law school and has held jobs in banking, the state legislature and local court system. He lived with his parents in their St. Anthony home.
