MINNEAPOLIS - More than a dozen residents are taking stock of their situation after an overnight apartment fire chased them out into the cold Wednesday.

Fire crews were dispatched to a building on the 3400 block of Portland Avenue South about 1 a.m. after they received a call reporting heavy smoke in the area. When they arrived they found a two-and-a-half story apartment building on fire; Crews soon called a second alarm due to the volume of fire.

Residents from a reported six apartments inside were able to escape safely. A fire department spokesperson says the blaze was kept mainly to the walls but that the building did suffer smoke and water damage.

The Red Cross was called to help 15 displaced residents, nine adults and six children. At this point there is no word on what triggered the fire.
