ST. PAUL, Minn. - The suspect in a Friday morning chase and officer-involved shooting has been charged with assault.
According to the Ramsey County Attorney's office, Brandon Gerard Christopher was charged Monday with second-degree assault and fleeing a peace officer.
Police say Christopher led police on a car chase and was injured in an officer-involved shooting just after 5 p.m. Friday.
The incident happened after a St. Paul police officer stopped Christopher's car near Front Avenue and Marion Street. According to the officer, Christopher drove off during the traffic stop.
The vehicle eventually stopped near Front Avenue and Woodbridge Street. Police say that is when Christopher tried to get out of the driver's seat holding what appeared to be a large silver handgun. When he didn't drop the weapon and pointed the firearm at the officers, they shot at the suspect, wounding him.
Christopher was taken to the hospital. Police say his injuries are non-life threatening. No officers were hurt in the incident.
