Boyd got his start in broadcasting as a 16-year-old announcer at his hometown radio station, WEVR in River Falls, Wisconsin. He majored in Journalism and Political Science at UW-River Falls and began his television career in 1984 at WSAW-TV in Wausau. Boyd worked at two more TV stations, KETV in Omaha and WITI in Milwaukee, before joining KARE 11 in 1996.

In 2013, Boyd was honored with two national Edward R. Murrow Awards for writing and feature reporting, his ninth and tenth national Murrow Awards.  He's also the recipient of the 2011 national Sigma Delta Chi Award for feature reporting - his third.  In 2007 Boyd was awarded a national Emmy for feature reporting.

Favorite story you ever worked on: Salt Lake City Olympics.

Favorite food: Wisconsin brats and a cold Summit or Surly.

Describe your perfect day: Picking one of the 10,000 lakes and boating with my family.

Your inspiration: My Dad, for working hard every day and never complaining.

Favorite subject in school: History

Favorite book: "When Pride Still Mattered" by David Moraniss.

Family: Boyd and his wife Sheri have two sons, Sam and Matt, in college.
