APPLE VALLEY, Minn. -- Sixteen-year-old Gwen Nelson of Eagan was on an overpass on County Road 38 in Apple Valley, driving to Eastview High School at about 7 a.m. Tuesday, when she hit some ice, slid toward the guardrail and then went over the edge onto Cedar Avenue below.

Nelson's Ford Explorer landed in the southbound lane of traffic, and the state patrol says it's amazing that even though it was the morning rush hour, she didn't fall on any other cars, and nobody else hit her either.

Nelson's car landed on its nose and the impact crushed the entire driver's side, with Gwen suspended upside down by her seat belt.

Still, she walked away with just minor injuries.

"Thank goodness I didn't hit anyone, for their sake and my sake," Nelson said. "And I can't believe I don't have a scratch on me. I mean, that's incredible. All I have are bruises and soreness and I'm fine."

The state patrol credits that to the fact that Nelson was wearing her seat belt. And troopers say that her accident is a reminder of how important it is to buckle up, especially with ice and snow on the roads.
