State trooper hit, injured while responding to crash
ST. CLOUD, Minn. -- You know conditions are bad when the emergency responder suddenly becomes the victim.
A Minnesota State Trooper was injured Monday when his patrol squad was struck as he responded to an accident just west of St. Cloud.
Patrol spokesman Lt. Eric Roeske tweeted that the trooper was on the scene of a pileup on I-94 near State Highway 23, sitting inside his squad when the car was hit by a Semi truck.
Roeske says the trooper suffered non-life threatening injuries.
All westbound lanes were shut down as troopers and other law enforcement re-directed traffic from Highway 94 onto Highway 23. Eastbound traffic was unaffected. The interstate reopened just after 2 p.m.
Monday's incident involving a state trooper being hit follows one that took place Sunday. The patrol says 30-year-old trooper Brian Bammert was outside his squad dealing with a crash on Interstate 394 near Penn Avenue just after 6:15 p.m. when he looked up and saw a vehicle headed straight towards him.
Bammert scrambled to avoid the 2008 BMW but was struck in the leg and left hand. The trooper sustained a minor cut to his hand. Bammert's boot hit the BMW hard enough to break the car's windshield.
