  • CHANHASSEN, Minn. -- The city of Chanhassen's insurance provider will not make payments to homeowners who were hit with a sewage filled water main leak last week.

The incident is considered an accident and as such, the city's insurance company will not be paying out.

"Very frustrating," said homeowner Jay Seltun. "But what do you do if no one's going to help."

Seltun is like 24 other homeowners, who for the past week have been cleaning up and will now have to pay out. Between damagers and clean-up, Seltun figures he's out anywhere from $20,000 to $25,000.

"I can sympathize with the residents it's a difficult situation and my heart goes out to them," said Chanhassen city manager, Todd Gerhardt.

Gerhardt said his hands are basically tied and that the city did everything it was supposed to in maintaining the water main and the sewer line.

The damage may have been done, but neighbors are far from finished.

"We are going to get together and try to decide if we want to pursue any action against the city's insurance company or the city in general," said Seltun.

In the meantime, neighbors are in the process of upgrading their insurance protection in the event it happens again.

Experts said in some cases of coverage a few dollars a month for extra insurance can make all the difference.
