Mickey Rooney claims he is victim of elder abuse
GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. -- Millions of Americans are victims of "elder abuse", according to the American Psychological Association (APA). The abuse can be physical, financial, sexual or emotional.
Film legend Mickey Rooney, 90, testified on Capitol Hill on Wednesday that he has been the victim of abuse at the hands of family members.
Rooney spoke in a strong and forceful voice without naming his alleged abusers.; Rooney has obtained a restraining order against his stepson and the stepson's wife in California.
"Even when I tried to speak up, I was told to shut up and be quiet, 'you don't know what you're talking about." It seemed that no one, no one would believe me."
Rooney claimed that he and his ninth wife were often left hungry with no money. It is often assumed that elder abuse and neglect appears in some nursing homes, but the APA said that most times, the abuse is a pattern of physical and emotional abuse within families.
Older people are often not able to respond to their treatment because of frailty and dependence on others.
