ST. PAUL, Minn. -- New statistics from the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) released Thursday show a spike in deaths and hospitalizations related to influenza in the past week.
Twelve deaths were reported during the week ending March 18. That brings the number of flu-related deaths since the start of the influenza season to 25.
Hospitalizations are also up: 101 persons were reported hospitalized with laboratory-confirmed influenza during the past week. Since the start of the flu season 741 persons have been hospitalized with laboratory-confirmed influenza.
Thirteen schools reported outbreaks of the flu, as did 7 long term care (skilled nursing) facilities.
In a positive development influenza-like illness visits to reporting clinics were actually down last week.
