MINNEAPOLIS -- A University of Minnesota student has died after he and two other people were struck by a hit-and-run driver on a sidewalk near Dinkytown in Minneapolis last week.
Twenty-three-year-old Benjamin Van Handel of Appleton, Wis. was hit by a car early Friday as he walked near 5th Street SE and 12th Avenue SE by a driver going the wrong way down a one-way street.
Van Handel suffered a serious brain injury and broken bones. He was listed in critical condition until he died Thursday afternoon.
Van Handel's family released this statement Thursday afternoon: "Despite his heroic efforts, Ben did not survive from the injuries sustained when he was struck by a vehicle last week. He passed away with his family and friends by his side this afternoon.
"Ben was a selfless, loving person who cared deeply for others. In this spirit, his organs are being donated so that other families will not have to say goodbye to their loved ones. Thank you for continuing to keep us in your thoughts and prayers."
Two women walking with Van Handel suffered minor injuries.
Minneapolis police say investigators continue to look for the driver.
