MINNEAPOLIS -- Northside residents have a new dining option along the Lowry Avenue Corridor. The Lowry Avenue Cafe is now open for breakfast, lunch and dinner at 2207 Lowry Avenue North in Minneapolis.
"This is just wonderful," customer Stella Ralph said smiling.
"It's been a while, but it is great to have a restaurant back in the neighborhood," customer Randy Donnerson added.
The cafe has company. According to the city planner, since 2008, 12 businesses have opened, relocated or reinvested in the neighborhood.
"We wanted a restaurant in here and and could not get anyone to do a business on the north side," owner Darryl Weivoda said.
So Darryl and his wife Janet did it themselves.
"I've been here my whole life," Darryl said of North Minneapolis. "I've seen it in the best of times and I've seen it when it was bad. I want to see the good times back."
That is why Darryl and Janet are doubling their investment in the neighborhood. The Lowry Cafe is around the corner from the couple's hardware store.
Darryl says there is room for more business owners who feel the Lowry Avenue Corridor's best years are yet to come.
"I would challenge anyone to come to Lowry Avenue to start a business. I think they'd find a lot of people that would be happy to have them come," he said.
The Lowry Cafe is open seven days a week starting at 6:00 a.m. Closing times vary. The full menu is described as comfort food with a twist.
