KANDIYOHI COUNTY, Minn. -- Authorities say a 45-year-old man is dead after drowning while trying to save his young son.

Daniel Michael Suter was attempting to rescue his 6-year-old boy after he fell off their pontoon boat on Bass Lake just before 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

While the boy swam back to shore safely, Suter disappeared under the lake's surface. Rescuers later found his body in 8 feet of water.

"He was just so full of life, so caring.  He was great guy and he loved his kids very much and it's just tough this happened to someone so nice," Jacob Reich, Suter's brothe in law said Wednesday.

Deputies say neither Suter or his son were wearing life jackets.

The Suter family had lived in a home on Bass Lake for about a year. Daniel Suter worked for a communications company, and is described by brother-in-law as a happy guy who loved hanging out with his family. He and his wife were married for more than 20 years.

Suter is described as a good swimmer, and those who know him are wondering what caused him to drown. A autopsy may shed light on what happened.

A fund has been set up to help Suter's family.
