MORRIS, Minn. -- Authorities have found the body of a western Minnesota police chief who had been missing since a boat capsized in Stevens County Sunday night.

The Stevens County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call at 10:18 p.m. saying a boat had capsized on Long Lake. Six people were on board but only five made it back to shore.

Divers found Donald Heikkinen's body around 4 p.m. Monday.  He was the chief police in nearby Hancock. Heikkinen was the only officer for the town and is well known.

"It happened so fast, you don't actually have time to think about how you feel yet," neighbor Jeff Klein told KARE 11. "It will sink in but his family, his wife, his two step sons... we're here to support them.  The whole town will help too.  If any town can pull together and help out it's this one."

Heikkinen is survived by his wife, 2 stepsons, and a daughter Mary Lou by his first marriage.

Officers called off the search late Sunday night due to fog. They resumed the search Monday morning but the murky water made the search difficult.

Long Lake is about eight miles east of Morris in Stevens County.
