MINNEAPOLIS -- Members of the Wildlife Research Institute and North American Bear Center finally know what happened to Hope the bear, she was killed by a hunter.

The hunter contacted the group directly Tuesday with information leading up to the death of Hope.

The hunter says Hope was killed the evening of Friday, Sept. 16. The hunter did not know it was Hope when she entered his bait area alone that evening.

He says he would never shoot a collared bear and would not have deliberately shot Hope. The hunter's identity has not been released

Hope became famous when her birth in northeastern Minnesota was broadcast live to a worldwide audience over the Internet.

Lynn Rogers, senior biologist with the North American Bear Center and its affiliated Wildlife Research Institute, said Monday that Hope was last seen Sept. 14.
