KWAZULU NATAL, South Africa - Mountain bikers have a reputation for thrill seeking, but a slice of adventure on the plains of South African was a bit too extreme for one pro rider.
Evan van der Spuy, a mountain biker on team Jeep South Africa, was pedaling in a race at Albert Falls Dam in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa when he was hit by a speeding antelope.
In a video shot by his teammate Travis Walker, you can hear Walker warning van der Spuy to "watch the buck." At that point, however, there was nothing he could do: The creature runs into the unlucky rider full bore, knocking both him and his bike to the ground.
Experts who have seen the video say van der Spuy was taken out by a red hartebeest, a type of antelope that can weigh as much as 330 pounds.
Amazingly van der Spuy didn't suffer any serious injuries, although his helmet was shattered. He tweeted later that he's "stable with nothing more than a very stiff neck," thanking his teammates for helping him.
The video, understandably, has racked up more than 2 million hits on YouTube.
