BEMIDJI, Minn. - Officials now say 72-year-old Gene Berthiaume died of natural causes Saturday while hunting in Beltrami County.
The Beltrami County Sheriff's Office said Monday's findings by the coroner's office conclude Berthiaume's death was due to natural causes and was not caused by a fall or injuries from a fall.
It was originally reported Berthiaume died from an apparent fall Saturday about noon in Woodrow Township, approximately 45 miles north of Bemidji.
Saturday was the he opening day of Minnesota's firearms deer season.
Two other deaths from the hunting opener have been reported.
An 84-year-old Maple Grove man died Saturday morning when his clothing caught fire near Hibbing.
Near Walker, a 51-year-old Sartell man died when he fell from his deer stand, causing his gun to accidentally discharge a fatal shot.
