ANOKA, Minn. -- Students at Anoka High School are mourning the death of a 16-year-old classmate who collapsed Saturday night while playing basketball.

A spokesman for the Anoka Hennepin School District tells KARE 11 that junior Kareen Hopkins died over the weekend after collapsing at the Andover Community Center.

Emergency responders were dispatched to the community center at 6:50 p.m. Saturday on reports of a teenager in seizure. Hopkins was transported to Mercy hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Anoka County Sheriff's Department spokesman Paul Sommer says deputies got to the scene three minutes after receiving a 911 call. An Andover Firefighter was already performing CPR on the teen when deputies arrived.

Anoka High School Principal Mike Farley said in a statement to student families that Hopkins had a pre-existing heart condition and died suddenly.

Farley offered counseling and emotional support to any student who needs it.

A family member tells KARE 11 that Kareen suffered a heart attack but those reports are unconfirmed.
