MINNEAPOLIS -- There's no question most weddings include some elements of tradition: candles, a bride, a groom.
But the wedding celebration of Nora McInerny and Aaron Purmort on Saturday will also be the culmination of a love story that's both modern and true.
"Everything's been interesting, and this is no exception," Aaron said on Friday.
About 14 months ago, the couple knew each other only virtually. They were friends on Facebook, and followed each other on Twitter. Mutual friends encouraged the two to meet in person, which they did at the very venue where they'll be having their wedding.
"He walked up to me probably 10 feet away from where we're sitting and said, 'you're Nora McInerny,'" Nora said at the northeast Minneapolis art gallery.
From there, the couple began a happy and adventurous love affair, one that took a dramatic turn this Halloween.
"I had two seizures at work, just out of the blue," Aaron said.
On Oct. 31, Aaron was rushed to Abbott Northwestern Hospital, where doctors later gave him and Nora a devastating diagnosis: Aaron had a brain tumor.
That same night, Nora decided life could no longer wait for them to do what was truly right -- the diagnosis had put everything into distinct perspective.
"Halloween night I stayed in his hospital bed, and we're like, 'we should get married,'" she said.
And so it was -- that at the start of Aaron's difficult journey, the couple decided to officially go on that journey together.
A few days after his diagnosis, doctors performed a surgery to remove most of Aaron's tumor. This week, Aaron started chemotherapy and radiation, and doctors believe that will help destroy any cancer left behind.
In the meantime, the couple decided to hold their wedding just as Aaron was beginning his treatment. So in two weeks time, friends and family planned their wedding -- a true testimony to a love story both modern and real.
"It was just unimaginable to wait any longer, everything just had a new sense of meaning and urgency," Nora said.
"I just couldn't imagine not having her with for every step of the way," Aaron said.
