GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. - More than 100 dogs and two cats are being cared for by the Animal Humane Society after being removed from a property near Bemidji Thursday.

A recovery team led by Humane Agent Wade Hanson removed 107 dogs and two felines from a property after being called in for assistance by the Beltrami County Sheriff's Office.

Authorities contacted Hanson after the animals were found during a welfare check of two women living on the property. The residents lived in separate mobile homes on the property with the animals.

The trailers were condemned after yesterday's findings.

On Wednesday one of the women surrendered 48 of the dogs to the Humane Society. Beltrami County Sheriff Phil Hodapp returned to the property Thursday to serve both women with a warrant to investigate the property and remove the remaining 61 animals that were not surrendered.

Crews transported the animals to the Animal Humane Society in Golden Valley Thursday night so they could be processed and have their medical needs assessed.  Each will be provided food and a comfortable place to sleep, vaccinations, and any other needed medical treatments.

The dogs are mostly small breeds, including pug, Chihuahua, dachshund and spaniel mixes.

For the 48 dogs initially surrendered to the Animal Humane Society, evaluations for placement in adoption centers or with local rescue partners will take place early next week.

The remaining 59 dogs and two felines seized from the property will be held at the Animal Humane Society's Golden Valley facility while the investigation continues.

As if things weren't busy enough at the facility, the Animal Humane Society will welcome an additional 75 dogs this weekend from rescues and shelters that are overwhelmed with the number of animals in their care.

For information on animals available for adoption, the public is invited to visit the Animal Humane Society's website. They can also stop at any of the five shelters located in Buffalo, Coon Rapids, Golden Valley, St. Paul and Woodbury.
